Product Description:
The design challenge was to create a floor design for a spiral stairs that evoked a nautical theme and maximized the natural curvature of a spiral stairway and the radiance of the handrails.
The design was limited to the use of three woods as opposed to the use of up to 42 different woods in my other floor designs. The woods that I chose were Paduk, Purple Heart and Curly Maple, which together make a dramatic statement.
The sign that the Nautilus "creature" is holding is 24-carat gold leaf and reads "limited species". This is both a play on the fact that only 3 species of woods were used in the floor and secondly serves as a reminder that the nautilus itself is a limited species with only a handful of it's kind surviving in the tropical oceans of the Western Pacific.
